Mr. Simmons spent several years in the military fighting for his country in World War II in the South Pacific Theater (Guam, Guadal Canal & Hiroshima).
In 1946 he was honorably discharged from the Military and returned to Jonesboro where with the aid of several persons such as, Ben D. Johnson Sr., Founder/owner of Winnfield Funeral Homes & Life Insurance Companies, Buck Edmonds, President-Edmonds Funeral Home (both of whom were in the Funeral Industry), Jerry Coles, Sr. and E.N. Francis Jr., whom he had befriended, Mr. Simmons established Simmons Funeral Home, a small Business which he owned and managed until God called him home on December 8, 1992.
Mr. Simmons was a perfect gentleman and was well respected throughout North Louisiana. He was the proud father of four children, Herbert Jr., Larry, Omega Raye and Dwight. Because of the many contributions he made on behalf of needy families, and a demonstrated love for all people, his memory will live on through the ages.

1907-1992
The Greater North Louisiana Community Development Corporation Small Business Learning Center is named in Honor of Herbert Simmons, Sr. who was born on September 16, 1907 in a local neighboring Community of Pleasant Grove. At an early age Mr. Simmons developed an insatiable will to extricate himself from the grinding grips of poverty.
At the age of 16, with only a fourth grade Education, He set out to explore the world. In 1924, after receiving training in Automotive maintenance at then Gatlin Chevrolet Dealership located in Jonesboro, he pursued this line of work in the States of Oklahoma and Arkansas. Later he returned to Jonesboro and became a millwright at the local paper manufacturing company in Hodge, LA where he remained gainfully employed until being drafted into the United States Army in the early 1940’s.
